Two rules block most of it. The rest is detail.

Most peer-to-peer losses in Kenya follow four patterns: forged payment confirmations, pressure to release escrow early, moving the trade off-platform, and third-party payment names. Paying only inside the platform and releasing only after confirming funds in your own statement prevents nearly all of them.

P2P counterparty safety

Two rules. Never release escrow until the money is confirmed in your own M-Pesa statement, not in a screenshot someone sent you. And never take the trade off the platform, for any reason anyone gives you. Almost every loss in this market is one of those two rules being broken under time pressure.

The four patterns

PatternHow it presentsThe block
Forged confirmationBuyer sends a convincing screenshot of a payment you never receivedCheck your own statement. Screenshots are not evidence
Release pressureUrgency, a story about a flight or a sick relative, repeated messagesUrgency is the tell. Genuine counterparties wait
Off-platform moveAsks to continue on WhatsApp or Telegram at a better rateRefuse. Off-platform means no escrow and no arbitration
Third-party paymentMoney arrives from a name that is not the trading accountDo not release. Open a dispute. This can be laundered funds
That last row is the one people underestimate. Accepting a payment from an unrelated account can connect your M-Pesa to funds under investigation, and the consequence is not a lost trade, it is a frozen account.

Choosing a counterparty

  1. Sort by price, then discard the top of the list and read completion rates.
  2. Prefer high order counts. A thin history at a great rate is a warning, not a bargain.
  3. Read their terms text. Anything unusual there is a reason to move on.
  4. Start with a small trade against a new counterparty even if the rate is worse.
  5. Keep every M-Pesa confirmation. Arbitration runs on documentation.

What good behaviour looks like from you

  • Pay the exact amount, from the account matching your profile, with the reference given.
  • Mark as paid only after the money has left, never before.
  • Do not cancel an order you have already paid for. Open a dispute instead.
  • If something feels wrong, stop and escalate inside the platform rather than negotiating.
What if my M-Pesa gets frozen over a P2P trade

Contact Safaricom on 100 for the transaction trace and keep every record of the trade. Where funds are tied to an investigation this becomes a matter for the relevant authorities, and having complete platform-side documentation is what helps you.

Is a higher rate ever worth the risk

The extra you gain on a good rate is fractions of a percent. The downside is the whole trade. That arithmetic never favours the risk.
